Mitt Romney has a message for Donald Trump and his fellow birthers: Get real.
The former Massachusetts governor and potential GOP presidential candidate said he believes definitively that President Obama was born in the U.S.
“The citizenship test has been passed,” Romney said on CNBC’s “Kudlow Report” Tuesday night. “There are real reasons to get this guy out of office … but his citizenship isn’t the reason why.”
The comments come after several GOPers, including Trump and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, made easy headlines after questioning Obama’s citizenship, even though his Hawaii birth has been confirmed by Aloha State officials.
Trump, who’s also considering making a bid for the Oval Office, even said he’s sent a team of investigators to Hawaii to get answers.
This week Romney announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee – an important fund-raising tool that often signals an upcoming run.
A surprising CNN poll released Tuesday shows Trump and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee tied for first place with 19% each when Republicans were asked who they’d support for the 2012 GOP nomination.
